Journey on a Knife's Edge

When I remember my past I pity
Thinking of the little girl who didn't notice a thing
until it was too late,
Thinking of the young woman who lost her inner voice
and started to hate.

Did you ever think about the scars you would leave
when your eyes sliced like knives?
Those silent stares.
You placed a muzzle on what was me
Yet your pain I did bare.

Numb, the light left my eyes but you didn’t see.
My thoughts forever locked inside
to escape the scrutiny,
Waiting for the day I would break free
of that bond's agony.

When I finally took that step you smiled
believing I couldn't walk too far with those shackles.
I clenched my fists,
Continuing my journey to freedom,
crossing off my lists.

My smile is no longer fake but true.
What I do is no longer for you.
I speak my mind
And friends I find
Who accept me for who I am.
I am no longer your lamb.

Are you shocked that I don't run back to you
after all that you did?
It is your turn to make a journey
to discover what it means to be a friend.
